Melissa Maygrove’s Top 5 Tips for Writer’s Block

I'd like to welcome Melissa Maygrove to my blog today, to help me with a problem I've been having for a while now. Plus, there's a chance to win a copy of Melissa's new book Precious Atonement. I'll leave it to Melissa to explain more...

I’m grateful to Annalisa for inviting me to visit. When I asked what she wanted me to write about, she posed this question:

I'm blocked, completely. What advice would you give me? [Imagine a really panicked whine here - Annalisa]

  1. Take a break. Pressure to write can make you try too hard, which usually leads to nothing or nothing good.
  2. Read some quality fiction. Often, a good book can get the juices flowing.
  3. Read some nonfiction. It doesn’t matter what it is—a biography, the newspaper, some general research—it can be the spark that lights a fire under your muse.
  4. Watch some movies or even a silly game show. You never know where inspiration might lurk.
  5. Click through images on the web. You can do a Google search or meander through a stock image site. This is especially helpful when you need to add some description to a scene.

Bonus tip:
Do you have an idea for a plot, but keep hitting a wall?
Ask ‘What if ______?’, then mentally carry the plot idea to its natural conclusion.

Didn’t work?
Fill in a different idea and carry it through again.

Don’t be afraid to insert something that seems totally opposite of how you envisioned things would go. (e.g. What if her mother really isn’t her mother?) Sometimes entertaining a radical idea brings about a twist that transforms a good story into a great one.

Thanks for having me. I hope this helps.

Thanks Melissa, great advice. I'm going to curl up with a good book, a good film and plenty of chocolate... (because I know #6 would have been 'eat chocolate'!)

Ruined women don’t hope, killers don’t dream, and the dead don’t feel pain.
Picture
Rachel Emerson is resigned to live as a spinster. Her parents keep her shameful secret, and her only brother, Seth, vanished mere days after witnessing her rape, taking her dishonor with him and giving them all an alibi for their grief. But none of that matters. Appearances are useless if she can’t bear the touch of a man.

Jacob Evans welcomes pain as much as he seeks to escape it. The graves of his wife and child remind him of his sins every day. When Lawrence Emerson offers him a job and a chance to move west, Jacob permits himself a fresh start. But letting go of his past is only an illusion. Lawrence’s sweet, shy daughter captures Jacob’s heart and provides him a perfect tool for self-torment.

Despite painful lessons of the past, history soon threatens to repeat itself, and as Jacob’s love for Rachel grows, so does his agony. Giving his precious new wife the life she deserves might cost him the very thing he values most—her.

A couple of awards

Firstly, I just what to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for my husband Peter - unfortunately he was not selected to play on the MTV stage in Plymouth next month.

I've also just heard that my short story didn't make it through to the short list stage of the Bath Short Story Award. On the plus side, this was the second time this particular story has made the long list of a competition this year, so I will be submitting it elsewhere ASAP!

*  *  *  *  *

Secondly, I have been nominated for a couple of awards recently, so I'm going to accept them now.

Chrys Fey from Write with Fey gave me a Creative Blogger award. Thank you Chrys!

The rules for accepting are:
1) Thank and link back to the person who nominated you.
2) Share 5 facts about yourself.
3) Nominate 10-20 blogs, and notify them.
4) Pass on the rules.

Rachel from Rachel's Ramblings gave me The Infinity Dreams Award. Thank you Rachel!

The rules for this one are:
1) Thank the blog that nominated you.
2) Tell us 11 facts about yourself.
3) Answer the questions that were set for you to answer.
4) Nominate 11 bloggers and set questions for them.

Chrys's questions for me :
1) If you could be any superhero, who would it be and why? Wonder Woman because she's completely, stonkingly awesome.
2) If you had to choose between permanently too hot or too cold, which one would you choose? Too hot, definitely. I work in an air conditioned gym, and I'm always so cold!
3) What's your ultimate writing dream? To win the Booker Prize. It's been the same dream since I was about 16.

And now for my facts (11 of them - to meet the requirements of the Creative Blogger award, you can stop reading after 5, if you want.)

  1. I have broken the big and little toes of my left foot. So far - touch wood - the right foot is safe.
  2. I cannot sing a single note in tune.
  3. But I love listening to music.
  4. I've had some bizarre crushes in my time, but currently it's Constable Crabtree from Murdoch Mysteries.
  5. I have never seen The Sound of Music, intentionally.
  6. I listened to so much hard rock/heavy metal when I was pregnant with #2 son that he would only fall asleep to rock music.
  7. I dislike drinking coffee, but love coffee cake and coffee chocolates.
  8. I love cake and chocolate.
  9. I re-read my favourite books over and over. I have read Pride and Prejudice at least 30 times, and watched the BBC version of it at least that many times.
  10. I put a tiny piece (and sometimes, not so tiny piece) of myself in almost every character I write.
  11. Erm... I like the colour orange.

I am going to select my nominees now, but I will leave it up to them to choose to accept one of the awards, both or none. I will also try not to nominate people who have already received these awards from other people - it's a tall order!

If you choose to accept the Infinity Dreams award, my questions are:
  1. What was your favourite childhood toy?
  2. Do you have a nickname?
  3. Which film/book have you revisited the most?
  4. Exactly how much do you like cake?

And now I'm going to write in the sun, because it's hot today!

Reflecting on the A-Z

I did it! I completed the whole month! I put up 26 vignettes, some of which I wasn't completely happy with, but I got wonderful comments anyway, so...

Thank you for visiting my blog this April!!

I decided on taking part in February, because I'd started to stagnate with my blog - I wasn't sure what I was doing with it or whether I was enjoying it any more. I chose to write vignettes because I'd spent the previous few months writing them for a competition entry and really enjoyed them - capturing scenes and moments in time without explanation or back story really suits me.

And, best of all, I've come away from the month teeming with ideas - not only for more vignettes and short pieces, but another novella (possibly just flipping over into novel-length territory).

The Good
  • I met some brand new bloggers that I'm really looking forward to getting to know better
  • I reconnected with some bloggers I've lost touch with
  • I was organised enough to visit and comment on other blogs - although I still have replies to write to the people who visited me
  • I didn't eat as much chocolate as I thought I would
  • The dog wasn't neglected
  • My kids still recognise me!
The Not-So Good
  • I started with the intention of visiting a lot of new blogs, working my way down the linky list, but as the month went on, I just didn't have time for as many new blogs as I hoped for.
  • I managed to completely ignore some of the blogs I've followed for years, in some cases not even realising they were taking part! I am so sorry if that was you.
  • I got so tired, and when I get tired I get grumpy... So I got grumpy too... oops!

And now, I'm looking forward to getting back to normal, to pulling out my WIP and having a few computer-free, coffee shop writing sessions.

How about you? How was your month?
Did you take part in the challenge, or sit back and read other people's efforts?

Today, I'm pleased to help Kyra Lennon share the beautiful new covers for her Game On series, and to introduce Book #4 Play On.

BOOK & AUTHOR INFO:

Game On Series by Kyra Lennon
(Game On #1-4)
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Book 1 - Game On:
After swapping her small town life to work for one of the top soccer teams in the U.S, Leah Walker thought she could finally leave the ghosts of her past behind. However, when she meets serial womanizer, Radleigh McCoy, the memories of her old life come swarming back, and she is forced to ask herself whether she has really changed at all.

Book 2 - Blindsided
After a successful first soccer season in L.A, Jesse Shaw heads to London with his best buddy, Hunter, but his world is turned upside down when a dangerous prank threatens his career and his blossoming relationship with Hunter's cousin, Isabelle. Isabelle Mills lives in Notting Hill with her parents and her twin sister, Georgia. When she finds out her cousin is coming to stay, along with his famous soccer player friend, her first instinct is to hibernate until they've gone. However, once she meets Jesse, everything changes. He's everything she ever wanted, but with so many obstacles in their path, can she really risk putting her heart on the line? Blindsided is a New Adult romance.

Book 3 - Sidelined
At the age of twenty-one, Bree Collinson has more than she ever dreamed of. A handsome husband, a fancy house, and more shoes than Carrie Bradshaw and Imelda Marcos combined. But having everything handed to her isn’t the way Bree wants to live the rest of her life. When an idea to better herself pops into her head, she doesn’t expect her husband to question her, and keep her tied by her apron strings to the kitchen.

Isolated and unsure who to turn to, Bree finds herself falling back into a dangerous friendship, and developing feelings for the only person who really listens to her. Torn between her loyalty to her husband and her attraction to a man who has the perfect family she always wanted, she has some tough choices to make.

While Bree tries to figure out what she wants, a tragedy rocks the Westberg Warriors, triggering some dark memories, and pushing her to take a look at what’s really important.

And now for the brand new...

Book 4 - Play On
Freya Phillips’ life was flipped upside down when she lost the man she loved in a tragic accident. Now she has to piece together the remains of her shattered heart and try to find a way to push through her pain to get her life back on track. With reminders of what she’s lost at every turn, anxiety takes over and instead of moving forwards, she finds herself hurtling in the wrong direction.

Freya’s downward spiral leads her unexpectedly into the arms of one of her oldest friends, and as they seek comfort in each other, they realise they have more than just grief in common. Guilt-ridden and confused, Freya is too ashamed to tell anyone what she’s done, but there’s no such thing as a secret in Westberg. When the truth gets out, will Freya escape the gossip with her friendships and pride intact, or will she lose more than she ever bargained for?

Home alone at the end of the summer

Tonight I am home alone. And next week the kids go back to school, denoting the end of the summer.

So, that explains the title of this post!

A sunflower for Tina
I've been in a reflective mood recently. It started early last week, when I learned about the passing of Tina Downey, a wonderful blogger who did so much for others. She was a fun, lovely lady, who was far too young. I 'met' her when I took part in the 2012 A-Z Challenge, and loved reading her blog. She will be missed by so much people, as the comments on her blog and Facebook page prove.

A few days later, I discovered Ailsa Abraham, an author I've known for about the same length of time, had been in a serious motorbike accident, and was in a coma (although I believe she's currently moving out of ICU into a normal ward). Again, Ailsa is a very caring lady who often thinks of other people before herself, and she's strongly opinionated, standing up for her beliefs and for other people. She's had her fair share of health issues this year, and just when she seems to be getting on top of them, this accident comes out of the blue.

Otters for Ailsa
So, I am thinking of both Tina's family and Ailsa this week.

And I'm also thinking how you just never know what's around the corner, how small worries shouldn't matter, how having friends and family with you is the most important thing in the world. We all forget, don't we? But we shouldn't. We should make the time to spend with the people we love. We should appreciate every moment of every day, even when some of those days are being pretty rubbish.

Happy release day, M.J!

I've just realised it's been a while since I blogged - I've just had nothing to say. I'll try to think of something this week, I promise.

But right now, I want to say a huge congratulations to M.J. Fifield because...

It's Effigy Release Day!

EFFIGY (Epic Fantasy), Book One in the Coileáin Chronicles
by M.J. Fifield

Release date: July 22, 2014

Now available in paperback and on Kindle at Amazon and CreateSpace (other editions to follow soon!)

The survival of a once-mighty kingdom rests in the hands of its young queen, Haleine Coileáin, as it slowly succumbs to an ancient evil fueled by her husband’s cruelty.

A sadistic man with a talent for torture and a taste for murder, he is determined to burn the land and all souls within. Haleine is determined to save her kingdom and, after a chance encounter, joins forces with the leader of the people’s rebellion. She gives him her support, soon followed by her heart.

Loving him is inadvertent but becomes as natural and necessary as breathing. She lies and steals on his behalf, doing anything she can to further their cause. She compromises beliefs held all her life, for what life will exist if evil prevails?

Her journey leads to a deceiving world of magic, monsters, and gods she never believed existed outside of myth. The deeper she goes, the more her soul is stripped away, but she continues on, desperate to see her quest complete. If she can bring her husband to ruin and save her people, any sacrifice is worth the price—even if it means her life.

Kyra Lennon talks football and other stuff

Kyra Lennon is touring with her new book, Sidelined, the third instalment of her Game On series. Today she's here with me to talk about football and other stuff. I've got the tea, and the cake, so I think we're ready.

Hello, Kyra, welcome to my blog.

Hello, and thanks for inviting me over!

Now you're here, you have to work for that cake, and answer a couple of questions...
What made you write a series based around a football team? (Yes, football, I’m British!)

Well, I needed something with a large team of famous people, and a sports team was the obvious solution. Football is the sport I know the most about, so I decided to run with it!

Do you understand the off-side rule?

Yes. I mean, in theory. My judgement when I’m actually watching a game is not so good lol.

I can think of a couple of referees who would answer that question the same way!
If you had to pick, which (real) team would you support?

You know, I was thinking about this recently. The reason I don’t watch football much anymore is that I don’t really have a team. Back in the day, it was all about Man U, but that had a lot more to do with Ryan Giggs’ legs than anything else! I’d probably go with a team local to me – it would be pretty cool to back an underdog team and watch them rise! (Well, you know, hopefully!)

Small clubs need all the support they can get. Okay, enough with the football questions… for now…
Game On is a five-part series – Sidelined is #3 – and I know you planned all five novels from the start. Has there been a time when you’ve considered stopping early? (BTW, if you did stop early, I’d have to disown you!)

Yes. Before I wrote Book 3, I did stop and wonder what I was doing. I felt that, since there had been a long gap between 2 and 3, that maybe nobody would care about the series and the characters anymore. Also, it was the halfway point, and I wasn’t sure I even had it in me to keep going for three more books. As it turned out, Sidelined has been well received, and I’m looking forward to getting Book 4 started!

Each of the books so far have had very different tones – how easy is that to write?

It hasn’t been as hard as I thought. I think a lot of authors fear they will fall into the trap of writing characters that are very similar, and have very similar voices. That has always been a big concern for me, I’m very aware of any similarities between my own characters. But with the Game On series, it hasn’t been too difficult. Each of the girls – and, of course, Jesse – all have very distinct personalities. Leah is very British and no-nonsense, Bree is bubbly and bouncy, Jesse is a young guy getting used to fame, and Freya is quieter, more reserved. So there are a lot of personalities to explore, and flipping between them hasn’t been as challenging as I expected.

What’s been your favourite review of the series so far? Which characters have people identified with the most?

This review by Cassie MaePartly because it came with pretty pictures, but also because it made me believe I’d really got it right because Cassie identified so much with Bree.

It’s difficult to know which character people have identified with the most. I think a lot of readers identified with Leah, the small town girl wanting to escape from her life and find out what the world is really all about – but likewise, a lot of people hated her for the decisions she made. People also identified with Isabelle in Blindsided because most girls at some point in their lives feel they have been overlooked, or aren’t good enough. One of the things I like to think is special about the Game On series is that there are so many characters, hopefully there is someone for everyone to relate to!

Taylor is a great villain. How did a lovely lady like you write such a nasty character? And will there be any more like her?

Aww! Well, I don’t think any book series is complete without some kind of villain, and Taylor’s pretty evil! I can confirm, there is one new villain to come – and she makes Taylor seem like an angel!

Ooh, good...
How easy has it been – as a British woman living in Britain – to get the American feel into the novels? Is there anything you’d have done differently?

Haha, I don’t always feel like I’ve done a great job of that. I am aware there could be a lot more, but once I start writing the story, the characters take over and the scenery fades away. If I could afford it, I would go to LA for a while and really experience it so I could inject the feel of the place into the story more.

Well, if you ever need a travel partner, I'm sure I could oblige, or just hide in your luggage!
And finally, what’s next in the Game On series? And, who won the English Premier League this season?

I wanna say Man City…? Or was that last year? Crap, I have no clue!

(Yes, it was City!)

Next in the Game On Series is Freya’s story, which is as yet untitled. Due to the events in Sidelined, I can’t really give too much away about it, though!

I can't wait for the next book, but in the meantime - while Kyra and I eat cake - why don't you take a look at Sidelined...

At the age of twenty-one, Bree Collinson has more than she ever dreamed of. A handsome husband, a fancy house, and more shoes than Carrie Bradshaw and Imelda Marcos combined. But having everything handed to her isn’t the way Bree wants to live the rest of her life.
