Kai #AtoZchallenge

His name is Kai. It’s not his given name; his parents named him Colin, and it really doesn’t suit the man he’s become. He’s a free spirit; he plays guitar at midnight, wears shorts in the winter, and his dirty blond hair has the remnants of dreadlocks from his Caribbean adventure.
He’ll be off again soon. It’s time, you see; no room for hangers-on, for clingy women, for love. He doesn’t want to be chained into a suburban life; and that’s what would happen if he stayed. He needs to see everything, feel everything. He wants to bury himself within other cultures. He laughed at Cara when she showed him the holiday brochure – her dream hotel, with its all-inclusive buffet and coach trips and cocktails delivered to the patrons on the beach.
“That’s all you want?” he asked, dripping with derision.
“Don’t you think it would be heaven, lying in the sun, doing nothing, eating dinner as the sun sets?”
Cara couldn’t see his disgust; she wasn’t looking for it. She thinks he’s in love with her, that she will conquer his wanderlust, but she’s really just a distraction, a bit of fun while he plans his escape.

Don't forget to check out the other challengers!

  1. And he'll break her heart when he leaves. Men like this are fatally attractive, but if you do manage to pin them down they wither.

    1. Exactly, Liz, they're not a good catch, in the end.

  2. It would be kinder of him to just tell her, otherwise he's a jerk! Then again he does sound rather self-absorbed.

    1. He'll have some company until he leaves - I don't think he'd care about how she'll feel.

  3. Hi Annalisa - yes .. Cara is just an interlude ... but she's also not very clever realising what's going on ... sad but so true for so many and particularly in young love ... we do need to see what's going on around us .. great story though .. cheers Hilary

  5. Poor Cara. If only she weren't so much in love and could see him for who he truly is.

    P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! :)

  6. good for Kai. Too soon to settle down and be a conformist. Cara needs to go on a fancy vacation and find her a like mind.

  7. Hahaha well, you've evoked some awesome emotional responses from your readers. He is a bit of a jerk, but hey, he's interesting as a character.

    Jerks often are. ;-)

    1. Yes, it's pretty cool people are commenting on the character. And you're right, the jerks are usually more interesting.

  8. Poor Cara! I hope she tells him where to go. But Kai does seem like an interesting character!

  9. I spend a lot of time visiting far away places and other cultures and just the thought of 'lying in the sun, doing nothing, eating dinner as the sun sets' bores me! I can do that at home! Good for Kai I say!

    1. I know, those kind of holidays would bore me after the first half day!

  10. Oh, poor girl. I feel for Kai though - I only can handle about an hour or two of just sitting on a beach unless I'm super exhausted and I'm nearly falling asleep in the sun. A day or two of sleeping in the sun (when totally exhausted) is good, but other than that, I want to swim, build sand castles, boogie board, and walk on the beach.

    1. Tyrean, I would definitely enjoy his idea of a holiday more than hers!

  11. Poor Cara. I think many of us have been in her shoes. We have all fallen for the guy who isn't ready to settle down and still wants to spread his wings and see the world. We fill a momentary need for them as they continue on their highway through life. They can be heartbreakers, but we can also learn from them and remember that people come into our lives for a reason and not every person is meant to remain in our lives forever. Wow, Listen to me go on. Your piece felt so real. I was back in high school or college reliving a heartbreaking moment in my own life.

    1. It is sad - neither of them are being completely honest, or they wouldn't be in that situation in the first place.

  13. Oh my gosh this is so vivid. Seriously deep POV.

  14. Kai sounds like a surf bum - my travel ideals are more about seeing museums and art galleries, but I definitely can't lie on the beach all day. He does seem pretty callous though!

Great job knocking all these short stories out, Annalisa.... how did you keep them all straight in your head!!

    1. Thanks Mark! One notebook page per story and scribbling out any story that seemed too similar to another - there were a couple of those!
